Monster Nor’easter for late tonight into Thursday

Monster Nor'easter for late tonight into Thursday

A storm bringing heavy ice and snow to the interior Southeast will reach the Northeast Wednesday night and Thursday with heavy snow and gusty winds. This is a very strong and complex storm! As I write this the storm is dropping a historic ice storm on much of the southeast US! Conditions could be catastrophic down there with hundreds of thousands of people without power. As the storm moves up the eastern seaboard today and tonight it will interact and ‘phase’ with an upper level low pressure system that’s moving out of the mid-west. As these storms phase together and combine their powers to form a super-storm nor’easter, it will create my all time favorite weather term… Bombogenesis!! This means the storm will ‘bomb out’ or rapidly strengthen and intensify as it heads up the northeast coast. This will make for potentially the biggest storm of the year for some parts of the mid Atlantic and northeast. As it moves up the coast the exact track is the key here as a subtle shift of 40-50 miles in storm track could mean the difference between just a couple of inches of snow to well over a foot.
The way it looks now, New Haven can expect 6-10 inches before mixing with and changing to freezing rain and sleet and depending on the exact track, even plain rain in the afternoon tommorow. Even if it does change over, all areas will go back to all snow before ending
Thursday night! Inland CT and MA can expect over a foot with the potential for 14-18 inches where it will stay all snow.
The snow should start in the New Haven area around 2 or 3 am overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. It will become very heavy in the morning and travel will be very treacherous if not impossible.
The big winner here as it looks now (all could change depending on storm track) will be northwestern CT, western MA, southern VT and NH, and heading northeast into Maine. All schools in CT and across NE should be closed tomorrow. Enjoy your snow day kids and teachers. I will update again tonight as the storm approaches and confidence increases on the exact storm track! -SS

Potential major storm next week

Potential major storm next week

This storm is currently over the northern Pacific, and it’s looking to cause cross-country trouble next week, from the northern Rockies to the Midwest and eventually to us in the Northeast.

Early indications are that the storm will grow large and strong after negotiating the Rockies this weekend. It will have an opportunity to tap into Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic moisture as it progresses eastward during the first part of next week.
A storm of this nature has the potential to bring strong wind as well as areas of heavy snow on its northern flank, strong thunderstorms on its southern flank and drenching rain in the middle.
Like many storms a week or so away, the track is key to determining where the boundary of rain and snow will set up. We will have to wait and see how much warm air gets pulled into this storm as it makes it’s way east. Ill keep you posted on this evolving storm. -SS

20th anny Blizzard of ’93

20th anny Blizzard of '93

This week is the 20th anniversary of the ‘Storm of the Century’. This is one the biggest and strongest winter storms of all time. It impacted over 140 million people over a very large area. This storm left one of the largest and deepest snow fields in history. The storm produced an extremely rare, massive swath of 1 to 3 foot snowfall from the gulf coast all the way up into Canada. In today’s dollars, losses from the storm would cost around $7 billion. In the U.S., over two dozen states were touched by the storm. The storm directly or indirectly impacted approximately 40 percent of the population of the U.S. This storm will go down in history as one the largest and strongest storms of all time.

Back to our current weather, we have quite a large powerful storm set to impact the region on Tuesday. Be prepared for soaking rains of over an inch for most of the area! It will clear out for Wednesday, but before it leaves it will usher in some much colder air into the region. -SS

Who did their snow dance?

Who did their snow dance?

Well its been a rough couple days for the forecasters in New England. First the snow for Wednesday night doesn’t come together. Then the storm explodes into a monster last night into today. The winter weather advisory that was posted for southern CT expired at 10 am, but they promptly posted a winter storm warning until 6 pm tonight for total snow accumulations of 6-12 inches. A couple blown forecasts is tough to handle, but this was and is a complex storm that went through many changes and phases.

There is a general 6-8 inches down, with higher elevations seeing a bit more! The radar is still pumping, and it should snow for most of the day. With temperatures right around freezing, the roads should clear up fast once they are plowed.

Looking ahead, I’m seeing 50s start to show up for high temps early next week, so there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Hope that you all are enjoying it for me as I am still in Vail doing some skiing. There is now a winter storm warning posted for Vail with 1-2 feet expected tonight into tomorrow. I’m sorry I missed that storm back east, but I’ll have my own storm to enjoy tonight. Stay safe! -SS

Saturn snow map

Saturn snow map

As of today, It looks like most of Connecticut should see over 6 inches of snow!!!! This is a big change from over the last couple days! Precipitation should start tommorrow afternoon and last all the way until Friday for eastern sections.

This is a very complex and potent storm that needs to be taken very seriously! it will not take much of a shift in storm track to double these current projections of snowfall! Stay tuned! lots to come- SS

***NOT A MISS***

***NOT A MISS***

Remember that scenario map i posted a few days ago?? Well for a couple days it looked like that wasn’t going to play out. Then last night i started seeing models pushing this storm closer and closer to us, and when I woke up today and the models are now coming into agreement.

This storm is going to explode over the Atlantic Ocean, and it appears it is going to be close enough to drop significant rain and snow over Connecticut. This is still a very complex and ever changing storm that we will need to watch very closely.

This storm has wavered back and forth everyday this week, and I am sure it is going to change again. As of now I hate to say it but batten down the hatches yet again and brace for prolonged coastal flooding and very strong winds. With gusts on the coast of 50-70 mph! More to come! -SS

***Tracking new storm***

***Tracking new storm***

Potential Monster storm for the middle of next week. It will probably be March 6-7. This storm is showing early signs of being a monster! We could be talking about major coastal flooding and the potential for power outages with the high winds. It’s too early to say whether or not we will see snow or rain in southern New England, but needless to say something is coming.

This could be a big time March storm like we’ve seen so many times over the years. Its not going to take a big change in this storm to bring feet of snow instead of inches of rain. I will keep updating this as we get closer. I love how mother nature knows i am supposed to fly out to denver on Wednesday. Something to watch -SS
