Warm-up brings allergies

Warm-up brings allergies

Seasonal allergies will be in full swing this week in the Northeast as seasonable temperatures take hold. After a slow start to spring, more consistent, higher temperatures have finally migrated northward.

However, with these warmer temperatures comes the return of seasonal allergies. With milder conditions starting in the beginning of April, the growing season has really started up. Plants and flowers all over the region are blooming or are ready to pop.

This sudden boom in tree blossoms could have allergy sufferers seeing symptoms more abruptly than usual.
As per this time of year, the tree pollen is the main allergy threat, especially from oak, maple, pine and elm varieties.

What seems to have awakened the trees was the sudden warmth early last week, followed by drenching rain in many areas. Even though temperatures slipped back following the rain, they have averaged about 10 degrees higher than the first week of the month.

Consistent warmth is expected through this week, along with occasional rainfall. The combination of the two will continue to spur on blossoming and pollen release.

Even though rain temporarily removes some of the pollen from the air, it promotes a new round of blossoming this time of the year. -SS

Still on the good side of the front

Still on the good side of the front

As the cold front is still north of us, the warm air will push further north today. It will give us our warmest temps so far this year. Some record highs have already been recorded in parts of NY state. Do what you gotta do, take off work, call out, just get outside and get some sun. This warm weather will only last into tomorrow as the front drops down to the south of us and brings showers and cooler weather with it. Get outside! -SS

Enjoy Today!

Enjoy Today!

What a stellar day today! Nicest day of the year so far! Enjoy it now, because it is not going to last. Remember last week I posted about that stationary front for this week? Well today we are on the warm side, but after tomorrow or even Wednesday, the front will drop back down to the south of us, dropping us back into the 40s and 50s with some showers around for the rest of the week. There is still a chance it stops just north of us, and we could even be approaching the 70s tomorrow and Wednesday. It’s tough to say right now where it will set up. Stay tuned and get outside and enjoy today! -SS

Satellite picture from Saturday

Satellite picture from Saturday

I just thought I’d post this satellite picture because its pretty cool how well it shows the snow cover still on the ground. All the white over land is snow still on the ground, and the white over the water is clouds. You can see a lot of Vermont and upstate New York still very snow covered, and the bright white just east of Lake Superior. That’s fresh lake effect snow from this past week, when they got feet of snow! All of southern New England is now snow free and ready for warm weather! -SS

Hope on the Horizon

Hope on the Horizon

As the forecast temperature trends come out for the month of April, we can breath a sigh of relief as it looks like we finally break out of old man winter’s grip. Starting in the second week of the month and continuing for the remainder of the month the pattern finally looks to shift from unseasonably cold temperatures to average and even above average temps! So just tough it out for the rest of this week, because by the weekend it looks to be near normal again as we see temps back into the 50s! Summers coming! (Maybe) -SS

Finally seasonable, but not for long

Finally seasonable, but not for long

After a slight warmup this weekend, temperatures are finally up to about average for this time of year. This will change early next week as a couple frontal boundaries move through the area by Monday and into Tuesday. This will chill the air, and in turn cool temperatures to below average levels again by midweek. The cold air usually doesn’t stick around for too long this time of year, and by the end of the week we should be closer to normal. Keep thinking spring! It’s coming! -SS

Tale of two Marches

Tale of two Marches

Finally we are seeing some 50 degree weather! I love how warm it feels right now, but in a month or two 50 degrees will feel freezing!

If we look back to last March though it was a little different. We saw many high temperatures in the 70s and even some 80s! This is remarkable as this year we didn’t even hit 60 degrees!

If you look at the stats for Central Park, this has only happened 9 times in the last 100 years!

As we push forward into April it will stay chilly, but there will be a slow warming trend! We should hopefully push 60 by the first week of the month! -SS
